Description

Young Padawan, unlock the Force inside you to become a Jedi Master in Star Wars: Jedi Challenges

To play Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, you need plenty of space. You need the Augmented Reality headset, at least 1 lightsaber controller and a tracking beacon to start the game. When you start the game, you can see 6 planets with 3 different game options, select the planet to see the 3 game modes. Your lightsaber is also a controller in the game. The theme songs are the same as the Star Wars franchises. It puts you in the mood quickly as a Jedi Padawan. There is some setting up to do with the game. Make sure you have enough space to move around when you are playing. Dodging enemies can be tricky.

This game has 6 stages, 3 game modes and 3 difficulties. The stages are the planets you pick to battle enemies, and it follows the Star Wars map. You have the galaxy presented as outer rim, mid rim, inner rim and core worlds. The stages in the galaxy Naboo, Garel, Lothal, Hoth, Takodana and Core. Crait is the 7th planet outside the galaxy far, far away and is a bonus stage for Strategic Combat. If Naboo sounds familiar, that is because it is the planet of Padme Amidala, from Star Wars: Episode 1. Darth Maul is the perfect teacher to teach you the ways of fighting, especially in the beginning.

Augmented reality headset projects holograms to your headset, so you can see enemies appearing in your own space. This is much safer than virtual reality, where your surroundings change and you might end up hitting something when you are playing. The sound and music also come from the headset, so be sure to set the volume to a safe level before playing.

The game tells you to dodge or wave to block incoming attacks when you are doing lightsaber battles. When you are starting out, the game is straightforward as you learn how to dodge and attack. Getting shot and killed by stormtroopers may not hurt, but it will be embarrassing because they usually have poor aim. You have to put your lightsaber in a certain way or angle before the enemy hits to block an attack. The game also tells you when you swipe to do damage, or dodge when the enemy does a swipe attack. Winning battles gain you Force Abilities and Passive, you can use your abilities in game by pressing the button that activates the lightsaber. While you do not really have the Force of the Jedi, it is nice that the headset grants you some temporary powers to help you defeat the Sith Lords.

Tired of battling? You can do some mind training by playing Holochess, or learn how to become a military strategist like Leia Skywalker by playing Strategic Combat. Select the planet you want to play in, and the difficulty you want to play. Holochess uses aliens, and the game tells you which alien does in the board game. Each alien pawns have health and deal damage to the enemy to win. When you select your pawn, the aliens will move, then attack the enemy . Your aim is to remove all the enemies from the board to win.

How to play

In Strategic Combat, your first battle is a simulation. The computer will teach you how to command your soldier and build towers. Your troops will report to you, and the computer will tell you what to do as you watch the enemy troops storm your base. You can also command heroes in the game to turn the tide of the battle. The Strategic Combat tests your ability to stay calm during a skirmish, with alarms blaring, lasers shooting and the theme song. It can be hard not to sweat during this mode.

The game does not allow you to skip levels, because each enemy is a learning curve with rewards. As you gain more competence in controlling the Force and lightsaber, the enemy reacts quicker and you may have to be nimble on your feet. Throughout the game, you do not move from your spot around the tracking beacon, because if you move too far away the lightsaber will stop responding. This can cost you to lose the battle if you are not careful. When you are battling Sith Lords, you know that you have lost when the game sounds Defeat.

There is also a Versus mode, where you can fight with each other with lightsabers. The computer tells you to slash or dodge as your opponent receives different instructions. Miss the cue and you will take damage. The game will announce when the game is over. Every time you take damage, the screen has a reddish hive pattern to show that you have taken damage. You cannot see how much life you have left, although in versus mode your opponent can. The game does not register damage if you do not follow the prompts. The lightsabers simply flash as if they clashed.

As a Padawan, your aim is to get better at reacting to attacks by hand-eye coordination. If your lightsaber does not match where your hand is, simply tap on the button to recalibrate it in the game. In Augmented Reality, you may have to turn your head slightly to check the sides for enemies, so rest easy knowing that there will be no Storm Troopers shooting from behind.

But if you want to be on the Dark Side, Star Wars: Jedi Challenge has a Dark Side Expansion pack. You can even get Kylo Ren's crossguard light saber. In the Dark Side Expansion pack, fight the good guys Yoda and Rey, or have fun destroying Rebel fleets instead. You do not have to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy fighting with lightsabers and training your Force powers, but you need the headset, the tracking beacon and a lightsaber unit.
