Description

Often described as "2D Minecraft," Terraria is a game that masterfully blends exploration, bullet-hell combat with difficult bosses, crafting, fishing, and building. While it's fun alone, Terraria is even more fun in a multiplayer server with some friends, where you can work together to create complex houses and utility structures, fight bosses together, and pool items for crafting to get everyone the best equipment.

In Terraria, you create a 2d pixel character and explore a large, procedurally generated world. Terraria was released in 2011 for WIndows. Since then, it's been ported to most other gaming platforms, including PS3 and Xbox 360, Ps4 and Xbox One, iOS and Android, and Switch.

Terraria is a game that centers around exploration, crafting, and building. Unlike many other games, it's got multiple facets of gameplay that allow players to set their own goals and playstyles. You can play Terraria through a lens of pure building, in which you gather materials to build cool structures, have a combat focus, in which you attempt to get the best equipment to challenge enemies and bosses, or something in between.

Part of what makes Terraria great is that it subtly encourages you to blend these different gameplay ideas as you play the game. If you focus on building, for example, in order to gather materials safely in new areas, you'll want to be able to challenge the resident monsters in combat. If you want to access new areas, you'll need to defeat bosses. Conversely, if you want to fight bosses, you'll often want to build out complex arenas, bridges, and havens to make the fights more accessible. This means that no matter what lens you use to view Terraria, you'll get to experience everything the game has to offer. You don't have to fight everything if you're more interested in the building part of the game, but you'll definitely want to get your feet wet a little bit.

Terraria has a massive world with many, many types of material to gather. Progressing through the world will give you access to more materials, more biomes, and better loot. Eventually, you'll get to a point where you can spawn a boss. Defeating bosses initially gives you access to more items and more areas. As you make it farther in the game, defeating bosses will often have massive implications on the state of your game world. One later boss resets the whole game, making enemies tougher and loot better, while others spawn new dangerous events that challenge your character and offer enticing rewards.

Terraria is an incredibly fun game to play with friends on a multiplayer server. It's great fun to progress through the game and make houses, transporter networks, storage systems, and other complex structures on your own. With friends, it's even better. Not only can you work cooperatively to build more ambitious projects, you can also share loot, compare buildings, work together to defeat bosses, or even serve as each other's bodyguards as you gather materials or build in dangerous areas. Playing with friends turns the game from something great into something amazing. The more relaxing parts of the game, like fishing and mining, are perfect excuses to gather with your favorite people, while the more difficult and engaging parts are made more fun and rewarding when you include more players.

How to play

The first decision you'll want to make when playing Terraria is what difficulty you want to play the game on. There are a number of settings that multiply together here. First, you can choose what happens when you die. On Softcore, you lose some gold. On Mediumcore, you lose all of your equipped items, but not your character. On Hardcore, your character is deleted if you die. There's a fourth and final option called Journey Mode that's made for people who want to experience the game without worrying about grinding or difficulty. Journey Mode characters can only enter Journey Mode servers, meaning you might be limited in who you can play with when you choose this option.

There's an additional toggle to consider when you actually make your world. In addition to selecting how big your world is, you can also select how hard enemies are. A Journey server is only open to Journey players but has some cheats and other options that they can utilize to make the game easier. Classic offers a "traditional" experience, while Expert gives you harder enemies but more loot. Master, the final option, is even harder than Expert mode and gives unique Master-only loot in addition to the Expert-only loot offered by the previous tier. These two difficulty options can be quite challenging, even with friends, so expect to spend a bit more time struggling with enemies and bosses and be prepared to spend time researching, strategizing and building to defeat even the easiest bosses.

When you load up a new world, your first priority should be building a house. You'll want to use an axe to cut down about 200 wood worth of trees, then build a workbench and make a house for NPCs to move into. This house needs to have two walls and a roof as well as a background wall, a door, and a light source. You'll also need to have a chair in your house and your workbench or table must be next to that chair. To make a light source, try killing some slimes to get gel and then using that gel and some wood to craft a torch. Once you're done NPCs will start moving into your house, giving you access to powerful options and rewards.

There are a LOT of things to do in Terraria. If you're new, however, one thing you might consider focusing on at the start is fishing. Many players immediately search their world for the Angler after they've built their house and take advantage of his quests to access powerful materials and equipment early in the game. Fishing is one of the best ways of getting money and equipment before you've defeated the boss that resets the world and unlocks hardmode, making it especially valuable in your first few hours of gameplay.

Terraria follows a gameplay loop where you unlock a challenging area, have to upgrade your equipment, and then become incredibly powerful relative to the enemies in the area. When you summon the next boss or unlock a new area, you'll feel much weaker, prompting you to start the cycle all over. Don't be afraid to use the wiki to look up cool new items, explore different combinations of equipment, and progress through the game in an unusual order. Just because you're in one place now doesn't mean you have to finish that area immediately. Finally, (and most importantly), remember that Terraria is a game about building. If you're having trouble with a boss or monsters in an area, consider building platforms, bridges, and safe havens to help you survive. In many cases, it'll turn a seemingly impossible challenge into something a lot more manageable.
