Description

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity lets you have all the fun hacking and slashing, and does the boring jobs with a click of the button.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a spin-off in the Legend of Zelda series. If you have played their main storyline, Breath of the Wild, then you will be familiar with the characters in this game. This game sets 100 years before Breath of the Wild, before Calamity Ganon appears and destroys the Kingdom of Hyrule. The story focuses on a small little guardian bringing the news of future doom to Princess Zelda and her Champions. The small guardian comes from the future, it has photographic evidence of Ganon destroying Hyrule. With this information, the King orders Zelda to get her training done. Zelda, on the other hand, tries to find allies to pilot the Divine Beasts to weaken Ganon.

If you wondered how it feels like to control the Divine Beasts, this is the game to do so. There are missions where you have to use them. In Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, there are more playable characters with different skill sets in addition to Link. Link still does not talk in this game, but he is the main hero. Zelda is now a playable- character, she uses her Sheikah Slate to wreak havoc on enemies. The graphics are still beautiful in this game, each section of the map blends seamlessly to another. The map is the same as Breath of the Wild to every detail.

While the Hyrule Warriors does not have blood or gore, this hack-slash game is rated E10+ because you kill enemies and they disappear. There are cutscenes to move the story forward, but generally your job is to kill monsters. The game tells a story about duty. King Rhoam, Zelda's father, keeps reminding of her role in stopping Calamity Ganon. Every chapter reminds you about how Calamity Ganon will destroy the world unless you do your duty. However, there are no scary moments, and plenty of funny scenes between Impa and the small guardian.

The game is more child friendly because there will be no adventuring. There will be several icons on the map telling you what it does. You can level Link up, create new recipes, unlock stables easily without having to travel. There are no shrines in the game, instead you get hearts by quests'. Hyrule Warrior: Age of Calamity focuses on action and story, but gives you the option of leveling up and finding new recipes simply by icons on the map.

Aside from Link and Zelda, the other playable character in the beginning is Impa, Zelda's bodyguard. As you move along further, you will be able to use Mipha, Daruk, Revali and Urbosa. When the story shifts to Ganon's revival, Riju, Yunobo, Teba and Sidon will appear as part of the story line for you to play. While the options open, the story does not allow you to pick and choose any character in the main story line; but for side quests, you can pick any character or characters depending on the adventure.

How to play

In Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, you have regular attacks and strong attacks. Regular attacks are weaker but faster, while strong attacks are slower but does more damage. You can have combo moves by combining regular and strong attacks in different pattern, but you will start off with a combo of 4 before it resets. The Sheikah Runes available in this game are stasis, cryonis, remote bomb and magnesis, you will be able to access the runes by the end of the 2nd mission. When you are battling bosses, like Moblins, Lynels and Hinoxes, sometimes the symbol is flash out. Those symbols are to tell you which runes to activate before the enemy starts a powerful attack. If you have good timing, you can stop the powerful moves and land in some good attacks.

You can dodge enemy's blows and move behind the enemy. When you attack the enemy from behind, or when you have successfully stopped a powerful enemy attack, a hexagon will appear. That is the enemy's defense, and every hit depletes a pink slice. Once the hexagon goes empty, you can initiate a weak point slash that takes a good chunk of life. The runes have a downtime after every use, regardless of which ones you used. While you are in battle, look out for treasures and Koroks.

Another way to do damage to the enemy is by using magic rods, but first you have to get them from Wizzrobes. There are three types of rods corresponding with the Wizzrobes: electric, fire and ice. After you pick up the rods the first time, the Wizzrobes will drop orbs to recharge the particular rod. You can use ice rods to stop enemies instead of stasis, and elemental attacks can also trigger the defense shield to appear.

Characters

In the main quests, there are usually Link, Impa and Zelda. You can cycle between the characters in the quest by pressing the arrow pads. There is also an order function where you can send your team mates to fufill an mission. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity also allows two player mode, so you can play with a friend on missions and side quests. This game uses a level system, and quests have a minimum level requirements. Fortunately, once you unlock the military training camp, you can level up using rupees.

You can gain rupees by smashing boxes and crates during battle, and by completing quests at first go. You can find and shoot blue rabbits (Blupees) for rupees when you find them. Rupees are important to fuse weapons, level up characters, buy materials and complete side quests. It is best not to gain rupees by selling items, because you might need them to complete some quests.

The main quests are marked by a double sword, battle quests have a single sword. You can gain more hearts and attack combos by complete quests corresponding to the character. Every character has their own icon, and they are located throughout the map of Hyrule. It is important to aim to complete as many of them, because they increase character's health hearts and attack combos for more powerful moves. Other unlocks include recipes, stables for items.

Of course, the franchises' main mission is to beat Calamity Ganon, the main villain of the story. It is not easy beating Ganon, you will need a strong team to do so. Once you complete the main quests, you unlock a special quest invovlving the tiny guardian. The completion of the main story quests does not mean get game ends, you can continue to complete the side missions. If you have been enjoying the story, you will be keen to complete that mission.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a 10 hour game, where you uses characters like Link to slash through thousands of enemies in battles. While the story of Zelda and Link is the main attraction of the game, the fun is in the missions and finding interesting things while fighting enemies.
